History - Public Records

The public records originate mainly from the Parish Records, the Census Records and the Local Trade Directories.

The full set of Census Records from 1841 to 1911 and the Bathford Trade Directories from the period 1854 to 1940 have been transcribed and can be viewed or downloaded by clicking on the links.

The Parish Records - now incomplete - are held at the Records Office in Taunton. We have typed listings of the combined Parish Baptism, Marriage and Burial Registers from 1602 to 1809 (14 Mb), the Parish Marriage Registers from 1810 to 1968 (22 Mb), the Parish Marriage Registers from 1968 to 1984 (4.4Mb) and the Parish Burial Registers from 1810 to 1967 (72 Mb) as downloadable PDF files. The information was researched and collated by Commander A S Craig in 1977/78. Click on the links to view (these are large files - the size is given after the file name). A downloadable Excel version of the Baptism, Marriage and Burial Register for 1602 to 1809 has been provided by Richard Isaac.

The Bath BMD website has the records from the Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths for Bath & North East Somerset from 1837 to 2007. This includes the records for the Parish of Bathford.

There are downloadable transcriptions of the record of men who served in WW1 from the "Book of Remembrance" held at St Swithun's church and the memorials to the men who gave their lives in WW1 from the War Memorial in the churchyard of St Swithun's church and their war graves in France and Belgium. This includes photographs of the war graves, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
